A total of 2.37 million children returned to school on Wednesday, accounting for 47 percent of the total.
But 561 out of the 20,902 schools that reopened on Wednesday had to send students back home after coronavirus infections surged in a warehouse by online commerce company Coupang in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.
Incheon city education officials decided to close 243 schools in the western port city again on Thursday, though high school seniors will be allowed to return.
Education Minister Yoo Eun-hae in a meeting at the government complex in Sejong on Wednesday stressed the need for schools to stay open. “If students can’t return to school under the current prevention regime, there might be no offline classes at all this year,” she said.
But public jitters are mounting as new infections rose by 49 in a single day after weeks in the single digits.
