The sax, the projects, the “spiritual ways” of the Russian-Livorno artist

by Edoardo Semmola

Dimitri Grechi Espinoza has been climbing and descending Mount Sinai metaphorically for six years with his saxophone increasingly dilated towards mystical suggestions. The result was a project, a trilogy, “Oreb”, which the Russian-Livorno jazzman, one of the pillars of the Fabbrica Europa festival and the Festival au Desert in Florence for years, has brought to fruition with the third chapter: “The Spiritual Way », Registered in the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa on 13 February 2019 and released digitally on 20 March 2020, waiting for the moment to be able to go out in stores too (Ponderosa Music Records). It is not sacred music but music that “dialogues with the sacred”. In many directions: the Armenian one of Djivan Gasparyan, the black America of John Coltrane, the Saharan culture. Divided into five parts, this “spiritual path” takes place between the themes of eternity-knowledge, spring-equanimity, summer-compassion, autumn-justice and winter-righteousness.

Every Wednesday “a meeting” in the church of Santa Maria del Soccorso

Starting from the concept that “connecting with others is listening to yourself” this third chapter on spiritual meditation will have a special debut from 27 in May: every Wednesday at 19 Dimitri Grechi Espinoza proposes on his Facebook page a musical journey of 30 minutes from the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the largest in Livorno. It is not a concert but a meditation session with music that the author recommends to follow from a silent place and using headphones or earphones.
